Mission
Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA is dedicated to developing and producing new plays by emerging and veteran playwrights, nurturing our membership of theatre professionals, and sustaining live theatre, the unique interaction of artist and audience. We believe the greatest value of the theatre artist is his ability through his work to reflect and affect the world around him.
Overview
Founded in 1992, Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA is the West Coast branch of the renowned New York company that launched many of the most resonant voices in the American theater, including Christopher Durang, Richard Greenberg, David Mamet, José Rivera, John Patrick Shanley, and Wendy Wasserstein. Our membership includes winners of Academy, Emmy, Golden Globe, Obie and Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize.
Under the Artistic Direction of Dan Bonnell and Laura Jane Salvato, Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA is dedicated to developing new American plays and introducing them to Los Angeles and the nation. We serve emerging and established theatre artists through creative developmental programming and high quality productions that offer new plays every opportunity for a future life. Our Playwrights’ Unit is a weekly new play incubation program where writers read and critique each other’s work. Our monthly Sunday Best workshop brings actors, directors and writers together to focus on works-in-progress. Our monthly Performance Lab is designed to enhance creativity and risk-taking and encourage the creation of new plays through improvisation and other collaborative writing techniques. Movement, voice, imagination building, and writing exercises are all part of the process. We also present two annual festivals: Winterfest features readings, staged-readings and fully rehearsed presentations initiated by our membership. This eagerly-awaited festival introduces from 20-35 new plays over two weekends, many of them moving to full production in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Our First Look Festival features rehearsed readings of new plays selected by our literary and artistic staff from over 250 submissions (we maintain an open submissions policy). First Look plays are under consideration for future production. Our new Workshop Series is a flexible program tailored to the needs of the individual script and designed to solve a specific script challenge.
One of Los Angeles’ premier producing companies, Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA has won or been nominated for every major L.A. theatre honor including GLAAD Media, LA Weekly, LADCC, Ovation, and NAACP Awards, among others, and our work has been featured on countless year-end top ten lists. A nomadic company, we have performed at [INSIDE] THE FORD, the Gascon Center Theatre, The McCadden Place Theatre, Miles Memorial Playhouse, Lillian Theater, and Stage 52 Playhouse. For two years we presented the theatre component of the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado (winner MCI Jury Award, the festival’s top honor).
