Called "the tiny Silver Lake theatre with the enviable reputation by the Los Angeles Times, Moving Arts was founded in 1992 by Lee Wochner and Julie Briggs. Over the years, we've presented over 100 plays, most of them world premieres, earning numerous Critic's Choices and awards.
As a company of resident theatre artists who produce only new and original work, our goal is to bring the best in new plays to the widest audience possible. We believe that we are helping to create world literature for the stages of the future and helping to launch the careers of emerging playwrights. So we're understandably proud that most of the plays premiered or developed at Moving Arts have gone on to future productions at other theatres of all sizes in cities such as New York, London, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, Denver, and that many of the playwrights we produce first soon land productions of these and other plays.
"We always straddle the line between humor and pain," says Briggs. Moving Arts is committed to producing high quality presentations of original dramas and comedies that are bold, challenging, edgy and relevant to the community. Powerful stories that speak to the human condition in fresh and startling ways. We are not limited to any particular style or genre, we are confined only by the inherent truth of the material. We also favor the eclectic; some of our late-night or short-run shows have combined elements of cabaret, biting stand-up, and performance art.
