The wRites of Passion of Philomela Nightingale - a Faerie’s Tale

Vitals
Theatre Company:
Santa Monica Playhouse
Playwright:
Laurel Airica
Description:

Distinguished English linguist Laurel Airica’s wRites of Passion is a scintillating selection of savory suites and activating excerpts from the true-life tale of Philomela Nightingale (her inner sELF) who takes the opposite journey through the Looking Glass into the mundane plane. Only by discovering the Secret Spells of the English Language, and encouraging humans to attune their language to the higher frequencies of natural harmonies – can she ever hope to find her way back hOMe again.

Airica shares her archetypal wRites of Passion in the elemental elfin tongue of rhythmic, rhyming, lyrical, light-woven verse — riddled with stunning punning, sparkling with the glitter of alliteration and spoken in sensuous, musical syllables. Audience members are left in no doubt that faeries are real; that they are living among us – disguised as ordinary humans; and that they have chosen to sacrifice their wings – to help all mortals transcend.

“.... for if our words so melt the heart
they start the Milk of Humankindness flowing –
so that every time we speak our mind we set another flower growing –
then I believe, before our very eyes, we Human Beings, like Butterflies,
will fully MetaMorphosize....”

"I am not a racist, but…"

Vitals
Theatre Company:
The Actor's Gang
Playwright:
Cynthia Ettinger and The Actor's Gang
Description:

The Actors' Gang invites audiences to witness the development of a new work-in-progress. With its signature take-no-prisoners style, The Gang takes a bold, funny, sad and incendiary look at what it takes to bring America's history of racism out of the shadows and shine a light on how it still envelops us today in " 'I am not a racist, but…'," conceived and directed by founding member Cynthia Ettinger and created by the acting ensemble. Beginning October 18, seventeen workshop performances will be open to the public at the Ivy Substation in Culver City.

" 'I am not a racist, but…' " challenges actors and audience alike to create a conversation about racism in America: its ugly divisiveness, its persistence and its deep rootedness. An ongoing work-in-progress that has been in development for many months, it follows in the footsteps of previous Actors' Gang-created theatrical events like Carnage, Alagazam and Embedded.

"There's a conspiracy of silence in 'white' America that makes voicing our secret, inner prejudices taboo," says Ettinger. "With this new work, we attempt to dismantle our silence - which is, I think, a form of racism in itself - and deconstruct our collective sense of isolation. The action in the piece is immediate and overwhelming, leaving no time to judge, only to experience. We hope it will unhinge some, enlighten others."

Associate artistic director V.J. Foster says, "We are confident that 'I am not a racist' will add to The Gang's history of creating a community dialogue. As we near a presidential election that is rife with racial overtones, it's imperative that we encourage deeper discussion."

The Tragical Comedy of Mr. Punch

Vitals
Theatre Company:
Rogue Artists Ensemble
Playwright:
Sean T Cawelti with Miles Taber and Rogue Artists Ensemble
Description:

Extended due to popular demand!

Rogue Artists Ensemble re-opens its world premiere production of "The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch" ("a triumphant fusion of text and technology" - LA Times) adapted for the stage from the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman (Stardust) and Dave McKean.

"Mr. Punch" is a dark fable in which the innocence of childhood and the pain of adulthood collide in the oft-fragmented recesses of memory. A man’s memories of his boyhood at his grandfather’s failing seaside arcade are full of talking badgers, crocodiles, car accidents, mermaids and murder - or could that just have been the Punch and Judy show? Told through the eyes of the man’s younger self, Mr. Punch explores the twisted nature of memory, the cruelty of adults and the beauty of simple kindness.

The Rogues bring Gaiman’s semi-autobiographical story and its illustrations by celebrated artist McKean to vivid life through an innovative hybrid of theater traditions, puppetry and digital media. American Radio Network calls Mr Punch "a feast for the eyes," and chose it as Critics Pick of the Year. LA TImes’ Kathleen Foley says, "The amazing design elements set a new standard for sub-99-seat theater."
